The mysterious Florida duo known as King Complex have built a reputation for their masked stage performances (not for hygienic reasons) and their ability to effortlessly morph into a completely different band from song to song. In recent years their sound has evolved into what is now a very lush and somewhat psychedelic sound, with a bit of a Pet Sounds on mushrooms feel to it. Their new single “If There’s Beauty” perfectly alludes to the vibe of the record, filled with angelic vocals, retro reverb and lush strings. Coming off the success of their (very different) record “Dark Disco”, which racked up over a million streams on Spotify, the duo decided to pivot in a different direction to showcase their songwriting and production chops. In the efforts to explore the acoustic side of music, the duo cranked out the keys and vocals for this track in just thirty minutes before committing to a final […]

Having done so for more than a decade, Alejandro y Maria Laura have developed a unique sonic language. Translated into English: The sky is closingThe big tear is pouring downEvery time I want toWrite a song about youThe sky is closingThe big tear is pouring downLet it fall, let it rainLet the heart heal itself Originally from Lima, Perú but now living in Mexico City, this singer-songwriter/producer duo incorporates Latin American folklore and elements of classic film score into their signature sound. It’s tough to find an 18 year old who thinks much about personal growth. At that age you’re legally an adult, so most teens assume that label earns you wisdom. It surely doesn’t, unless perhaps you fail often at an early age and learn a lot in the process. That’s what was on the mind of Lucy Cloud when she headed down to Music City to write “Crash And Learn” with co-writers Sean Mosely and Justin Morgan. “You’re going to make mistakes. It will happen. You can’t be so hard on yourself. You have to let yourself feel whatever emotion you’re pushing away. You have to allow yourself to feel and to grow. The more you bottle up all the emotions, you’re just not going to learn. Then, they’ll explode, and it won’t end well.” The arrangement for “Crash And Learn” is powerful yet understated, with Lucy’s voice firmly in […]

The Familiar’s music often sounds ominous, but nothing bad really ever happens. Just the glow of slow-burning embers softly illuminating the darkness. Out this week, their debut full-length album “Shelter” is itself a long-form crescendo. Starting with the dark and brooding “Spectre”, the record slowly unfolds into the light culminating with the ethereal release of the lead single, “Everything”. The song’s vivid imagery romanticizes life in a remote, frigid landscape where the complications of city life are rendered numb by the cold: Rawest simple thingsBread, water, museMagical and undefinedSparkling the faint daylight Simpler herePhone frozen unusedWatching bus headlightsTrained on snowy hues Since their chance encounter above the Arctic Circle in Norway, the transatlantic duo has taken their time to meticulously craft their music exactly the way they want it. Ruth Mirsky’s sultry vocals provide a perfect complement to the dark, pulsating synthesizers and cinematic orchestral elements of Tromsø-born producer Mads […]
