There are literally billions songs out there about romantic love, but for some reason very few artists write about friendship. Songs about platonic love is a common request in briefs and we always struggle to find them. Which is why we’re psyched to have the best friendship song ever, “Pick Up” by retrowave goddess Anna Yvette. The opening verse says it all: Who do you call when you’re all aloneand you need to get outta your head?F-r-i-e-n-d your friendWho lifts you up when you’re feeling down? And can help you to turn it all around?F-r-i-e-n-d your friend “Pick Up” is the second single off of Anna Yvette’s much anticipated album “Deja Vu”, which will be released with an accompanying graphic novel by the same name. As the summer winds down to a close, everybody needs some smooth grooves to relax to. “Naked Neighbor”, the new album by New York City Nu-Disco collective Bad Business Club, whisks you away to a dreamy 70’s poolside soiree with the smell of chlorine, coladas and cocaine in the air. With flawless chops and super tight production, Bad Business Club gives us a modern take on Giorgio Moroder-esque Disco and classic Yacht Rock. Granted these are two genres most people either hate to love or love to hate, but there’s no denying that it’s as smooth as silk. The standout single on the record is “Runnin’ From You”, a masterpiece complete with funky bass, jangly guitar, congas, swirling synthesizers and sugary harmonies. If this one doesn’t get you to unbutton your shirt a little, chances are nothing will. Check out the brand new music video for “Runnin’ From You”:

The 1990’s and early aughts were a golden era for hip hop and R&B, and as an original member of Jurassic Five DJ Nu-Mark was there for it all. Fast forward two decades and Nu-Mark is bringing old school back to school with a new project titled “Run For Cover”, focused on reinterpreting songs from this era with live instrumentation from around the world. The first single off the record just dropped last week, and it’s a Middle Eastern take on the classic all-star remix “Pass The Courvoisier” from Busta Rhymes’s 2001 album “Genesis”. Decked out with tons of hand percussion, oud, doumbek, and a full horn section, this track will have you feeling like you’re blasting through the Sahara in a Range Rover. Producer, turntablist and veteran member of the legendary hip hop group Jurassic 5, DJ Nu-Mark is considered one of the most creative on the scene constantly […]

From the moment you listen to Instupendo‘s music, you instantly get sucked into his beautifully eccentric mind. At just 22 years old, he spent the better part of his teen years meticulously developing his own singular sound marked by his soft, whispery voice amidst a flurry of artfully enveloped electronic textures. With his brilliant new album “Love Power A-Z”, just out this week, Instupendo takes his craft to a whole new level. Considerably more poppy and upbeat than his previous album “Boys & Girls”, Instupendo balances out his deadpan vocal delivery with a healthy dose of whimsical sound design. “For everything, I designed tiny sounds that fill and stretch the songs to their full potential, like gum (akin to Vespertine-era Björk). Each song’s meant to feel like a diorama or fold out book, stuffed with little secrets waiting to be noticed.” Never content with going too far in any one […]

Who doesn’t love a remix? Not like a boring dance remix, I mean the good kind. When thoughtfully created in collaboration with new voices, remixes can completely reinvent a song, adding depth and new meaning. Not shying away from the idea of reinterpreting her highly personal album, Laura Marano has just released “YOU (Deluxe)” featuring artists like Jean Deaux, Mark Diamond, and Alextbh. Most intimately, she invited the subject of her song “Run”, Thom Macken, to sing a duet and contribute a new verse. “It was a really cool thing to collaborate with someone that I obviously feel so connected with and trust so much,” says Marano. “We reworked all the songs and made them all feel like me, and I feel like we definitely tell the same sonic story throughout the whole EP.” A prolific songwriter and classically-trained musician, Laura Marano has earned more than 200 million streams across […]

Dan Berk is a bit obsessive, which might actually be his secret weapon. As a child, his deep love for acoustic cover artists like Leroy Sanchez, Megan Davies, Boyce Avenue and Emma Heesters led him to start over-analyzing every detail of the craft. He soon found himself cracking the code to the perfect acoustic cover and set out to begin recording his own. Starting in 2018, Dan released a steady string of acoustic covers that quickly racked up well over 100 million streams on Spotify. These covers seemed to resonate deeply with the Gen Z crowd who found comfort in his emotional renditions of songs like “Solo”, “Burn”, “Hey Brother” and “Ruin My Life”. Now with a devoted fan base of 1.1 million Spotify monthly listeners, Dan Berk is moving into the next phase of his career by finding his own voice as an artist. This past week he debuted […]

You might not expect a man whose given name is Princeton Von Coleman to be a big dude with shoulder-length dreads living out in rural Arkansas. But for that same person to go by the stage name Yuni Wa (short for Yunibasaru Wa, or “Universal Harmony” in Japanese) you get the feeling he’s perhaps not someone you can easily put into a box. Or maybe he’s just living in the future and can’t be bothered with your antiquated expectations. Having produced a total of 34 albums (not a typo) since his first release on his 17th birthday in 2014, to say that Yuni Wa is prolific is a gross understatement. It’s almost like a new word is needed to describe his creative output. Among his first releases was an album called “Context”, the first in what has become a four-part series culminating with the final edition “Context 4” which just […]

Rochelle Bloom doesn’t seem to care much about what other rappers are doing these days. Her debut album “Partly Cloudy” is not trendy, you surely won’t find anything on the radio that sounds quite like it. Her music projects her own individual aesthetic; sexy but not sexual, dark but positive, cerebral yet poetic. Clean mixes not needed. The album release arrives with a beautifully filmed music video for the lead single “Stories I Create In My Head”, directed by Derek Evans. The video is stark and unsettling, as is the video’s emotional narrative about the struggles of family life, what defines success and living up to the expectations of others. Still fairly new to the Atlanta hip hop scene, Rochelle Bloom has already developed her own unique sound on her own terms. Having just had her very first placement earlier this year with her song “Dandylion” on CW’s “Charmed”, things […]

Here in Brooklyn this time of year is a big deal, it’s when we finally get to enjoy our first taste of warm and breezy weather. And after the brutal COVID winter, it’s all the more special to finally be able to get outside and bask in the sun! This feeling isn’t lost on native New Yorker turned L.A. music supervisor Russell Manning, aka Rush Midnight, whose new single “Wine & Summertime” is the perfect soundtrack to getting back to enjoying the simple things in life. The second single off his upcoming album “Delilah”, the song is dreamy, sensual and subtly funky. Somewhat reminiscent of Tame Impala, “Wine & Summertime” strikes a balance between retro and futuristic depending on the perspective of the listener. As you might expect from a band led by an Oberlin-trained jazz bassist, Rush Midnight’s music is centered around Manning’s flawless melodic basslines. With less emphasis […]
