Mexican-Cuban singer-songwriter Leiden just released her latest social and art project, ‘VOLVER AL CORAZÓN’. Composed of songs with touching stories that were co-written by women in prison, this album truly gives a voice to those deprived of their freedom. Leiden spent a year working in five female Mexican prisons and gathered the testimonials from inmates to shed light on their experiences. In addition to her role as an artist, Leiden is an activist and the founder of Jueves, the first music label in Mexico owned and run exclusively by women. She’s known for her ability to fuse Latin American roots with contemporary sounds to create a modernized twist to Latin music. Cashae, the 3x Grammy nominated producer duo from Miami, are back with a slick new Afro-Latin House banger called “Hold On”. Featuring sultry vocals from fellow roster member Kiddo Al, the track is the perfect song for chill club and party vibes. Officially slated for a November 18th release, this song is the first single off an upcoming new Afro-Latin House focused EP. Coming through with another hip hop banger to add to the collection is Jenn Morel with her latest single, “Estilo Cochino”. The Dominican-American rapper’s infectious cadence and swagger definitely sets her apart from the rest. Switching up the flow and increasing intensity throughout the track, at the one minute mark she spits a lightning fast verse that would make Busta Rhymes blush. If that weren’t enough she also styled, produced and creative directed the one-shot music video (see below). Miami-based artist/producer Andre Mateo’s new single “MIRA” is sure to make you look. Originally hailing from a little town off the coast of Venezuela, the Latin art collective Zeta just released their latest album “Todo Bailarlo” on the midwest indie rock label Skeletal Lightning. The group collaborated with a collective of musicians spread out across the world known as The Abajo Cadenas Orchestra to explore a variety of genres popular throughout Latin America. The album is very much reflective of the group’s roots and multifaceted cultures. The collective’s sound varies from dense polyrhythmic percussion with Afro-Carribean influences to retro 70’s post-rock psychedelic tracks. The true essence behind the collective is that they honor the ideals of resistance against the unjust treatment of living beings and cultural/racial prejudices. Whether it’s through music, film, design, or cuisine, Zeta’s style and sound can be perceived in many different mediums. In the Caribbean coastal city of Barranquilla, Colombia there’s a movement of freestyle rap battles where up and coming rappers get together to spit fire and make a name for themselves. The best of the best inevitably end up in Flowkillas Studios, working with Curvelo James. Curvelo and his partner Morley de Moya have been hosting the Freestyle Barranquilla competition for five years, inspired by the pro freestyle league Urban Roosters which originated in Spain but quickly spread throughout Latin America. This movement has fueled an emerging Colombian Latin Trap scene, and Curvelo James is right in the middle of it all working with the best talent his city has to offer. In her stunning new single “Visiones Doradas” (“Golden Visions”), singer/songwriter Loli Molina conjures up an introspective journey through the rugged terrain of the Andes region. The overall tone of the song is melancholy, meant to evoke both the harshness and beauty of the environment. The “golden visions” are an apparition, a mirage in the desolate landscape. The poetry doesn’t translate so well into English, but perhaps it’s beside the point. The music tells its own story, as all great songs do. Loli Molina was born in Buenos Aires but is now based in Mexico City.
