“Cabbage” by Orrin and “Smoke” by TheRealEVK are featured in episode 5 of the new FX mini-docuseries “Hip Hop Uncovered”, airing February 26th on FX, or catch it streaming on-demand on Hulu. About “Hip Hop Uncovered” “Hip Hop Uncovered” is an examination of a dying breed of power brokers who operate from the shadows of hip-hop. Set against 40 years of music history, this six-part documentary series takes a deep dive into the paradox of America’s criminalization of the genre and its fascination with the street culture that created it and still exists within it. Instead of telling the story of hip-hop from the top down, “Hip Hop Uncovered” tells the story from the streets up, as it reveals the untold story of how America’s streets helped shape hip-hop culture from an expression of survival and defiance into one of music’s most dominant genres.

The Familiar’s music often sounds ominous, but nothing bad really ever happens. Just the glow of slow-burning embers softly illuminating the darkness. Out this week, their debut full-length album “Shelter” is itself a long-form crescendo. Starting with the dark and brooding “Spectre”, the record slowly unfolds into the light culminating with the ethereal release of the lead single, “Everything”. The song’s vivid imagery romanticizes life in a remote, frigid landscape where the complications of city life are rendered numb by the cold: Rawest simple thingsBread, water, museMagical and undefinedSparkling the faint daylight Simpler herePhone frozen unusedWatching bus headlightsTrained on snowy hues Since their chance encounter above the Arctic Circle in Norway, the transatlantic duo has taken their time to meticulously craft their music exactly the way they want it. Ruth Mirsky’s sultry vocals provide a perfect complement to the dark, pulsating synthesizers and cinematic orchestral elements of Tromsø-born producer Mads […]
Claire Guerreso has had more syncs than some record labels, and is far and away one of the most talented songwriters working in the business today. Her staggering ability to write and perform in just about any genre has led to notable placements on prominent shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, Reign, Lucifer, Pretty Little Liars, Shades of Blue, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond. She can also sing her ass off and is just about one of the coolest people you’ll ever meet. We have the distinct privilege of representing this musical force and her extensive diverse catalog of songs that seem to fit into nearly every brief we get. Among the most badass songs in this catalog is “Savage”, which was just released on the back of an ad campaign for Samsung. Co-written by renowned Nashville producer Tony Esterly, this masterpiece checks all the boxes. It’s haunting, sexy, […]
Starting his musical journey as a drummer and eventually finding his way to the guitar, Minneapolis-based folk/country artist Michael Gay (f/k/a Almighty American) draws his inspiration from his dad’s record collection. With the sounds of Willie Nelson, John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker deep within his heart, Michael is releasing the first two new singles this week under his own name. A matched set, “Long, Cold Winter” is about persevering through the cold hard winter while “Good Night” is about enjoying a summer night by the Mississippi River. According to Michael: “It is my little ode to Minnesota, celebrating both sides of the coin. Living here has taught me to embrace seasons in life even when you’re looking for that chapter to close. We’re stronger for it.” The sentiment resonates with a lot of us this year, just as we enter what is likely to be an unusually long, lonely […]
Like so many of our favorite artists, Memphis rapper Daz Rinko just loves to mix it up. His recent single “Candy Mane” is a dreamy concoction of hip hop, R&B and retro 80’s dance pop, like a pure sugar rush like you get from mixing all the fountain soda flavors together. Produced by Italian producer Cheap Limousine, “Candy Mane” gets it’s throwback vibe from the classic DX7 piano, bouncy synth bass lines and electric guitar dripping in spring reverb. Daz leans further in to the nostalgia vibe with a nod to MTV in the video: Daz’s brilliant 2017 debut EP “Black Boy Joy” showcased his southern take on future bounce and lyrically tackled some of the struggles facing black youth today. It frankly sounds fresher and more relevant than much of what was released this year. It’s no surprise he received praise and recognition from NPR, Noisey, Pigeons & Planes, […]
Eddy Braveaux has been honing his craft for over a decade, developing a unique hip hop aesthetic he calls “dream trap”. Born Edward Ebri to Nigerian immigrants in Jacksonville, FL, Eddy is a proud first generation American. With grit and determination he’s built a reputation for himself not just as a talented rapper, but also a producer, recording engineer and graphic designer. A true independent creative. Braveaux’s style is heavily influenced by martial arts and video games, built around dense beats and employing sly, incisive wordplay. Throughout his career he’s mostly remained a solo artist, but recently he decided to branch out and start doing features and collaborations. This includes his new single “INCOMING”, featuring an early member of XXXTentacion’s infamous hip hop collective Member’s Only, Miami rapper Fukkit. “INCOMING” has a mellow swagger to it, with Braveaux laying back in the cut and unleashing Fukkit to provide contrast with […]
Enter the Päterverse. An accomplished actor, writer, director and recording artist performing under the moniker Päter, Parmida Kakavand’s unique style of songwriting navigates themes like self-discovery and mental health with an irreverent, lighthearted touch. So it was no surprise that the brilliant lead single “Dam, Damn” from the self-produced EP “SOLE” received well over 300k streams on Spotify. Quite the achievement for a debut release. It’s also what caught our ears, it’s just a damn good song! Following on the heels of that initial success, this past week Päter released a powerful follow-up single “Earth In Revolt”, a frenetic climate action anthem that the world needs to hear. “I wrote this song when I was driving down the highway early in the pandemic and there was this massive, orange sunset filling up the whole horizon. It felt like nature flaunting its ability to reclaim itself. That’s where the “Earth in […]
